Landing

The landing of the first arrivals

The first group landed on Friday, 28 July 1865.

Everyone was very tired and needed shelter and somewhere to sleep. There was space for some of the families to shelter in the wooden storehouse. The only option for the others was to search for somewhere outside to shelter from the weather. It was a very hard time for the mothers and their children in these first few days. Some mothers were in tears in the rain.

Better days ahead

But things did start to get better! Mothers of young babies and toddlers were given permission to sleep on the deck of the Mimosa until the cabins were ready. However, the single boys had to sleep in the wooden cabins – with no roof above their heads!

During the next few days, planks of wood had to be removed from beds on the Mimosa to build a roof on top of the cabins.
