Success at last
The first few years were very hard for the Welsh settlers in Patagonia. Farming was difficult because the Patagonian land and climate were so different to Wales. They lost crops and animals due to floods. Things didn't look great for the Welsh settlers and a lot went hungry.
One day, one of the Welsh settlers had an idea to irrigate the land. They built irrigation channels to bring water from the Chubut River to the dry land. This made growing crops easier. Building these channels was a very tiring job, but meant a better quality of life for everyone.
Wheat was their best produce. Their wheat was of such standard that they won international prizes for it in world famous agricultural shows in Paris and Chicago.
