Arriving at Chubut Valley

The River Chubut is the name given by the natives to the river which flows through Chubut Valley. ‘Chubut’ means ‘transparent’ and the Welsh settlers were grateful for the crystal waters to quench their thirst and to help them farm the land.

The Welsh settlers gave the river a Welsh name, Camwy, which means ‘winding’ in English. Both names, Chubut and Camwy, are still used today.

The Welsh settlers also built a small town and named it Caer Antur. Representatives of the Government of Argentina decided to call the town Rawson. This was to honour the Argentinian, Guillermo Rawson, who made the scheme possible.
