Tehuelche

The Natives

The Welsh weren’t the first people to live in Patagonia. One tribe who had lived there for hundreds of years before them were the Tehuelche.

The Tehuelche were very tall people with dark skin, long hair and often painted their skin to protect them from the sun. The men wore a piece of cloth called a cheripa and tied it around their waist. The women were covered from head to toe in animal hide. They wore the hide with the fur on the inside and the outside was painted red.
