The first arrivals

Beginning to build

Both of them had planned to use soft clay (tosca) to build cabins for the Welsh. They had shaped the clay into blocks to build the cabins. They also wanted to build a storehouse to keep their furniture dry. The aim was to build a wooden roof on these buildings.

Whilst Lewis Jones sailed back and forth to the town of Patagones to collect more animals and wood, Edwin Roberts and the five labourers built the camp in the bay.

The first step of the building work was building a storehouse. But they were unlucky! Once they had built the first wall it fell to the ground. What was the best thing for them to do? The decision was to build the entire storehouse out of wood. But unluckily, there wasn’t enough wood left to build roofs on the sleeping cabins.

Preparing for the first arrivals

Going to live in a new country was a big challenge for the Welsh settlers. Patagonia was so far from Wales. Because of this, it was very important to prepare before arriving in Patagonia.

In June 1865 Lewis Jones and Edwin Cynrig Roberts travelled to Patagonia. They wanted to build a camp for the first arrivals. They had five labourers to help them.

They brought animals with them to live in Patagonia. They also brought wood to build cabins and a storehouse.
